Fresh & Spooky: The 4th Annual Juried Show

Art Gets Spooky at Summit Artspace

Hairy monsters, gaping maws, alien beings, diabolical dolls, graveyards, ghosts and nightmares are just a few of the eerie images on display October 4 through November 8 at Summit Artspace.  Fresh & Spooky, a show of 91 wild, weird and unearthly works of art, opens with a meet-the-artists reception on October 3 from 5 to 7 pm.

Traditionally Fresh Art is the gallery’s annual juried show featuring new work, new ideas and new media submitted by local artists.  Since the show fell in October this year, the spooky theme was added.  “The theme inspired enthusiasm and some unexpected inspiration from even our most traditional artists,” said Joan Colbert, gallery coordinator.

All types of media – paint, ceramics, photography, metal, and mixed — are represented, including two and three dimensional art.  The diverse group of artists includes all ages and experience levels from established to emerging to students.

Guest juror Mark Soppeland, an artist and University of Akron professor, was so delighted with the bizarre and eccentric work submitted that he decided to display it all.

“It’s a perfect exhibition for the Halloween season,” Soppeland said.  “There’s something to offend everyone.”

Soppeland selected the three top-prize winners, who will be announced at the October 3 reception.  “There are so many extraordinary pieces that I’m also giving several honorable mention, as well as dishonorable mention awards, he said. OMNOVA Solutions Foundation underwrote the cash awards of $500, $300 and $200.
